Random question thread

seems that one element of thread drift that is particularly irksome for some members is the random question

so I thought it best to have a place to ask questions that come to mind while on other threads but dont necessarily belong there

my personal random question for today would be

Quote:
where can I find tables of average wave lengths for a given area of sea

seems if I am designing for a specific area, average wave height and length would be a key piece of info
I dreamed it up while reading the Axe Bow concept thread but as certain members have previously made overtures of keeping threads on track I thought it wise to simply create a space to ask the occasional random question

cheers and best of luck
B

"Random answer" to your question: In most cases, the meteorological institute(s) covering the area will have statistics available. The wave topography can vary considerably between neighbouring waters, and it is very interesting to see how the local, traditional, "old-time" work/fishingboat shapes actually reflect the environmental differences!

Great idea, Boston.

When I was reading the thread about guys who converted sailboats to outboard-powered fooling-around boats, I wondered if they cut off the keels. (I'm trying to decide what to do with an Illusion 12 hull I dragged home.)

Why do my keys/wallet/TV remote always go missing and turn up in odd places?

Why in hell do people show up on Jerry Springer and Povich to be internationally humiliated in front of millions of people??

And since when am I a senior member?

Why is there air?

Sorry; I'm a Bill Cosby fan and couldn't help myself.

I actually think this is a good idea for a thread.

If you build a concrete boat in the woods and it falls over on you, will some one hear the screams and call 911 or do you deserve it for building a concrete boat in the woods?

I was really hoping someone could help me with the skin rejuvenation cream thing, because I need a place to keep my wallet and keys when taking a shower at the gym.

Saw this question is a science magazine today and it got me thinking.

Can it get so cold that fire will not burn? And or could it get so cold that a fire that would burn under normal circumstances not burn.

If you need 3 things for fire -fuel/ heat/ oxygen then if the heat is taken away then the fire will go out,--no?

answer is yes
at absolute zero oxygen is a solid
IE no molecule motion = no chance of combustion
heat is friction friction is motion
no motion no heat and no heat = no combustion

ok how about a serious random question

does anyone ever ship a boat overland on its side

what I mean is if the beam is to wide or requires a more expensive transport has anyone just built a cradle and shipped there boat on its side assuming that gets it to within highway specs for cheaper transport
I could brace the **** out of the interior and build a cradle that supports at every bulkhead
leave off the lead, engine and stuff that would not do well inverted for the trip
still be able to build it here where I live and then drive it to the water

36' loa
11+ beam
looks like about 9' keel to cabin top
hell under 10 its just a sign says wide load

I am presently looking at a shoal draft yawl and its beam is 11+' but its ttl height it less than 10
so if I transported it to its launch point upright it would cost me a fortune
but if I transported in on its side then it would cost me a lot less

no chase cars
no blinking lights
no special permits

what do you say folks
anyone turned one on its side to get it into the drink

Haven't seen one trailered 90 degrees on its side, but the big guys do custom tilt trailers like http://www.skaterpowerboats.com/customtrailers.html
