"The technology of appllying air gasbag to the launching and landing of ships overcomes the restrictions of traditional slide board technology which is commonly used in building small or medium size ships. After years of practice and accumulation of experience, we have developed this technology from facilitating the launching of only 100 ton ships to current 7000 ton ships."

The engine is not new to the market with millions having been installed in the Smart Car, manufactured by Mercedes in Europe and Canada for the past 5 years. The complete unit installed weighs in at 9 lbs less than a Rotax 912, and can put out between 40 and 64 DIESEL horsepower.

The Pelena Express vessel does have a propeller - but it's located inside a pipe inside the boat. A screen or trashrack stops logs & coconuts from hitting and damaging the propeller...................

Pelena Energy of Australia has developed technology for reliably operating diesel engines on coconut oil (CNO). It is planned that the vessel will be operating on a blend of diesel fuel and coconut oil in late 2006/early 2007, after business establishment, and later on pure coconut oil. The aim is to eliminate the copra processing in villages and instead produce oil directly at the village level. This will provide income for villagers and minimise the dependence of Solomon Islands on imported oil. Of course, the minimisation of Greenhouse-gas emissions are also significant.

Thought of putting this in "Dumbest moves ..." thread, but it's also a good random video, even a boat theme, sort of.

The Pelena Express burns coconut oil and is powered by Cummins.

HMMM..... looks like some candidates for the Darwin Award to me. Oh well have your fun in any way you can, but don't involve the rescue services to bail you out if things go badly.

There was a change of the wear parts on the rubber seals. The bow seals are shortened by 4 mm per hour full speed at an average.

Great photos, George!

The second one of the big air cushion patrol ship had me puzzled until I went to the web site. Wow. The "inside the mountain" dock. Neat.

I think it has been in several movies, or at least inspired several stage sets.

I like that definition of a "boat"! Waterborne vessel under 65 feet is a boat, so what is it if it's 65 feet 2 inches long then? a battle ship?

Much prefer the ancient one of "any vessel that can be hoisted aboard another one is a boat" Its pretty damn loose and fits most small vessels which of course is what a boat is! Depends on the size and lifting gear of the 'mother' of course!! (Oh yes and by definition ALL submarines, no matter how big, are boats, confused, you will be!)

Thanks for clearing that up, Mike. The US Navy will be glad to advise Congress, the next time they are told they can't buld any more ships, that they're only building boats now.
