The Navy's next-generation air-cushioned landing vessel named "Black Kite 631," or "Solgae 631," is to be delivered from its builder Hanjin Heavy Industries and Construction Co. this month, the Defense Acquisition Program Administration said. However, the DPAP declined to disclose the number of vessels to be put into operation.

The military has spent 49.5 billion won ($52.6 million) to develop the amphibious vessels over the last five years under an acquisition project codenamed LSF-II.

I can see the sense in that beastie! Certain parts of the world (swamp etc) it would be ideal A lot cheaper than a hovercraft and a lot less intrusive too I would imagine! Hardly a military vehicle tho - but that's the Russians for you!

The way I see it is that the hovercraft is less intrusive as it's low pressure footprint does little if any harm to the vegetation below it.

Where this airboat has the advantage is that it has no delicate skirt which rough ice might crew up. Also tall reeds and grasses which disrupt an air cushion seal to the surface are just folded down and over by an airboat (more intrusive but effective).

The air boat judging from it's large engine will use at least twice as much fuel to do the same work.

I'd like to know how the airboat fairs in rough seas, the hovercraft may be at another disadvantage there although they have more in common than not.

This hovercraft was obviously designed to be extremely intrusive.

Hard to say for sure without drawings, but the hull seems to be designed for some rough water capability, perhaps able to function in a displacement mode in heavy weather?

550 tons cargo + company of combat troops + 60 knots. Greece has 5 of these. More importantly, China has ordered a half dozen, with rumors they will evaluate, then build their own. Lightning thrusts into small, pesky offshore islands, anyone?

Great video, George!

I've seen short clips related to that before, but never something so detailed and vivid. Good one!

Funny, but compare the impact any other craft that size would have on the environment and respectively it is still less intrusive.

1. No prop chewing up sealife

2. No wheels or tracks leaving scars on the terrain.

I would not want it to go over my car mind you, but with the eight foot high bubble of static air pressure under the craft you could walk around underneath it (ears might pop a little).

When I said extremely intrusive, I was being humorous, refering to the obvious warship design and the multiple gun and missle launcher mounts. The air cushion will not be intrusive on the environment, but that ship will be intrusive on the other guy's turf!
