George,

Just wondering, is there any data on the performance of aircushion craft in heavy seas? The searider looks like it would revert to displacement catamaran mode in rough weather, but I've never seen any discussions or reports on the subject.

I think you are right, a top heavy raft prone to tipping over and with the skirt system providing lots of surface area for drag resulting in no directional control.

I have several "wacky ideas" for resolving this, although none of the ideas are wackier than a hovercraft its self.

There is this:

Quote:
In deep water, its V-shaped hull will allow it to operate as a speedboat, cutting through the waves. In shallow water it will transform itself into a hovercraft .............The craft has a retractable skirt

This new secret superboat is the latest British weapon to help fight the war on terror. The stealth boat, to be used by the Royal Marines, is thought to be capable of reaching speeds of about 70mph.

When I was back in the UK they used to run Hovercraft ferries accross the English Chanel. They don't do it anymore, I think because they had to cancel too often because of bad weather.

Got to agree with Walrus (again)...'tis rather an old photograph...but good to see the Daily Mail is at last catching up with the news....

Twenty years ago (1987) - pulling the 'old pals act' - I cadged a 'lift' in one of the earlier VSV Halmatics around the Isle of Mull when the SBS crew were up on the West Coast of Scotland (sniffing around the distilleries...)
Fast, certainly, and fairly 'silent' as turbo diesels go - but cramped as hell.
They spent a week in Oban Bay raising little more interest than the odd "Get that f*ckin bathtub offa ma mooring...."

It begs the 'scary' thought - just how aware are the public (and Daily Mail) when the 'Terrorism' card is universally being played by Western Governments....Unless of course the threat of 'terrorism' is just an excuse to trim back our freedom of choice, thought and movement....1984 revisited ?

I love the twin sugar scoops on the cat.

This one is pretty sporty looking, could do without the guardrails though.

Did you note the way we got of the subject of terrorism PDQ then? Is that taboo then? (I get the feeling that Bergalia might, just, be right but hell we're not allowed to know that are we[I feel a knock on the door at 0300 coming on!])

We're allowed to talk about terrorism, no problem.
It's talking (inapropriately) about the American Government that will have the MIB on your doorstep at 0300.

A sad truth it is, PsiPhi. Those who dare to ask whether said government really is giving them the whole story regarding terrorism and its associated war, are labelled as conspiracy theorists and shunned from further debate. It actually seems to be quite an effective strategy; look at how little debate there is on Bush asking for another 40-odd billion for the war this week.

Dash it Walrus - just reading your note has brought the Australian Secret Service to my door. Bloody property surrounded by massed didjeridoo bands...A couple of helicopters with loudhailers circling overhead relaying Rolf Harris' 'Tie me kangeroo down, sport...' A mobile projector screening non-stop 'Crocodile Dundee' on the side of the house...And that's Kylie Minogue on the phone singing 'You should be so Lucky'...

Peri,

30 knots under sail and comfortable living spaces, yahoo!

But why do the interior designer and marketing types have to ruin her with "floors", "walls", and (grrrrr) "toilets"?
