S Korea to develop ‘flying ship’

Friday, September 28, 2007
SEOUL: South Korea said on Thursday it planned to develop a ‘flying ship’ capable of carrying 100 tons of cargo at a cruising speed of up to 300 kms per hour. The 300-ton ‘wing-in-ground’ (WIG) craft is expected to be built by 2012 and cruise at 250 to 300 kms per hour, government policy-makers at a science ministers’ meeting said.

The craft will be 77 metres (254 feet) long and 65 metres wide, and is designed to benefit from the powerful natural lift achieved by objects travelling at high speed close to the water surface.

The Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries, which is supporting the project, said the government planned to spend 84.5 billion won ($91.7 million) over the next five years on research and development.

The private sector, including main contractor Daewoo Shipbuilding and Marine Engineering Co, will spend another 85.5 billion won, Yonhap news agency reported. The ministry said new laws and regulations were being written to cater for WIG craft and training courses were being set up for operators. “Once the craft is successfully launched, we expect it to add one trillion won to the overall national economy every year and boost employment opportunities,” said a ministry official quoted by Yonhap.

I'm fairly sure the 'Africar' eventually gave birth to the Citroen CV1 - but no doubt I'll be 'corrected' when Frosty returns...(He's a fund of obscure, totally boring and useless information)

Wooden car? Well the old Morgan sportscar was mainly of wood so it's not too unusual! As long as the engine wasn't made of wood - that 'wood' be a bit awkward!!

Just to credit him:
Harley Palangchao, a photo-journalist based in Baguio City, Philippines

"Men villagers of Banaue in Ifugao province join in the friendly wooden scooter race during a recent culture-based festival. But more than the race, Ifugao tribesmen are racing against time in the uphill battle to preserve the world-famous Ifugao Rice Terraces built by their great ancestors more than 200 years ago."

The first one is true, not sure about the second - after all why do women live longer than men - they do less thus don't wear out so soon!
