Yes, I agree Jolly and Hoyt. There is no hard and fast rule to the use of Sonar and Radar. As Jolly said, echo location is a better term.

There is a blind human, a savant, that uses echo location by clicking his tongue for echo location. That is relatively low frequency.

Bats uses a higher frequency chirping sounds but its uncanny ability to dodge obstacles seems to indicate to scientist that it is listening to harmonics, beyond what can be heard. Basically still a sonar but at a much higher frequency. I am intrigued if there is a new study made. The latest is that Brazilian bats have been clocked to be the fastest flying "animals" as the article said.

The quote that says ‘‘Radar’’ is taken from the text below the linked video.

In the video itself however they say ‘‘echolocation’’ as Jolly and Rx say, and nowhere in the spoken video text it says ‘‘Radar’’.

Far as I know Radar is echolocation by using electromagnetic waves, and Sonar is echolocation by using sound.

I believe bats use high frequency sound for echolocation rather than electromagnetic waves.

So for bats I'll think echolocation would be a right term, and Sonar would be a more specific right term.

Indeed marine mammals use sonar too, but because of the different medium in which the sound travels the used frequency is different, marine mammals use a lower frequency I believe.

Thanks Rx for the info and links [IMG] - Thanks to Hoyt too, very interesting [IMG]

Basically by "savant" you didn't say anything wrong Rx,

The English word "savant" comes from the French word "savant" which is a form of the verb "savoir", which means "to know", and comes from the Latin word "sapere" which means "to be wise" - "taste" - "have good taste", and so "savant" is a good thing.

The old term "idiot savant" however is something else, as it means "silly scholar", and is now mostly abandoned because of its unpleasant connotation, and as such nowadays often is substituted by the term "savant syndroom".

There is however mixed use of the term "savant", see meaning #2 in the below "savant" quote, and the last part of meaning #1 in the "idiot savant" quote.

Teodoro Nguema Obiang Mangue - - Quote from Wikipedia: December 10, 2016
According to the next linked articles eleven Supercars from the fleet of Teodorín Obiang are currently seized in Switzerland, and also his second and much larger Superyacht Ice seems to be moving out of Europe, maybe on the run home and heading south for Equatorial Guinea to prevent she's seized too . . . ? ?

The last above linked article (Nov. 10, 2016) says Teodorín Obiang's Yacht Ice is moored in Gibraltar, but according to some ship info and tracking services Link* > Link | Link > Link she's now moored on the other side of the Strait of Gibraltar in Tangier Morocco at 35°47'10.7"N 5°48'05.3"W shows now a cat for me on December 10, 2016 at 00:17 Zulu time (= UTC).

Here's a trifle from a few years ago of the same protagonist...

Mon. 6 February 2012: France impounds African autocrats' 'ill-gotten gains'

Mon. Juli 8, 2013: Cars seized from Equatorial Guinea president's son reap 2.8 million euros

    Here's video of the September 2011 seize . . .

Hear the engine sound and revs up from 53 sec, sure no wheel spin, but a lot of smoke coming from under the bottom at the mid-engine area up from 56 sec, and there's also a smoke plume from the air intake on top of the car from 57 sec to 1:05, looks like they're burning up the clutch of the Maserati MC12 there . .

Doesn't seem easy to handle 652 Nm (481 lbf·ft) torque at 5,500 rpm with 1,497 kg (3,300 lb) curb weight going up a car hauler with such a low car, maybe next time they're using a winch . .
