"Thru Adversity" Hopefully it will be a success. Again like the 1900's copies i'm not sure what these ultra modern aqua spaceships will prove out to be. One point i'd like to make here, any vessel built today resembling an old fore and aft sailer is usually operationally successful over a reasonable lifespan. I often wonder how large the graveyard these wonderbirds occupy. --- ??????? ----

can the hovercraft be scaled down to dinghy size? Small enough to hoist up on davits behind a 25 foot sailboat?, or manually hoisted aboard on foredeck, over fore hatch? :)

Sure they make them that small, running on lawnmower engines and what not.

    Advantages of a hover dingy:
    1. Don't need a dock, just find a beech or boat ramp and fly ashore.

    2. Depending on the level of spay, your feet will stay dry and you will not have to wade ashore.

    Disadvantages:
    1. Should the seas get to a state while at anchor in a harbor that you want to spend the night ashore, a small hovercraft is the least likely method of transportation you would want to take as it does poorly in choppy waves and high winds.

    2. Most but not all hovercraft are noisy, so you may arrive on shore with an angry mob to meet you, even less friendly as you sandblast their faces with sand or other debris, and because you have no brakes should they cross your path, you may just knock into them and send them to the ground on their butts.

    3. The cargo capacity of a hovercraft is less than that of a boat of comparable size. Meaning a two-person hovercraft (plus gear) will be larger/bulkier than it's displacement craft counterpart even tough it will actually weigh less.

In general I'd say give it a try and see if it suits you, your needs, and your lifestyle.

A hovercraft is not a replacement for a boat. A hovercraft is for doing things a boat or other amphibious vehicles cannot. For instance if to get to your destination you need to cross a low tide mud flat, a bog, a bunch of Lilly pads or rocky shallow river inlet then a hovercraft will get the job done.
