Laser sailing

Somewhat funny 70's movie about Laser sailing in 40 knots of wind.

Can anyone explain to me why most in the video do not have their centerboard completely down?

sure one always runs down with plate up, less drag, plates are simple for lift upwind, stopping leeway, down wind no need just wee bit for directional stabilty, used to sail laser, good fun, very flighty tender

nice music though, read beaufort scale 40, full gale, foam blown long streaks, spray in sheets, I,ve been in 40 crossing Tasman, and believe me that was not like that video, and been in 80 in tugs, you simply dont want to be there

40knots

Had my doubts about the knots also but it was in the intro of the movie so i shamelessly copied it.

About the centerboards, sure it is best to pull them when going downwind but in these conditions some in the video could have had benefit by keeping them down...

Board up - less heeling moment, even if you sacrifice some windward ability.

I guess if you must capsize, that is probably the best place to do it.
