F$#k Kach, I have surfed most of my life (until of course I moved down to this cold climate) and have always had a deep seated (and at times well founded) fear of sharks. That don't help. Plenty of great whites down here, and plenty of seals. Plenty of murky water, and AAGHHRRM.... In my home town (byron bay), when I was out surfing, about a Km or two away a diver got taken by something like a six plus meter great white. Honeymoon couple, out with a scuba diving company, swimming together out at Juline Rocks, picture perfect, then, monster great white comes straight at them, he pushes her out of the way, shark swallows him whole. All the local big-fisherman and shark hunters set out after it, managed to net it, dragged a couple of their boats out miles and miles to sea- at the same time as they emptied round after round of shotgun into it- at the same time as it reguritated bits of his body- and then escaped the net, and dived down (most probably to its death by shotgun pellets.) Also have seen many big sharks out there myself. Tigers and bronze whalers. Don't get me wrong, I am pro-shark conservation, but they still scare the S$#t out of me. Hans.

I kid you not. My sister was working for the dive company that lost the 'customer'. I was surfing at the very beach where the boat that took them there lauched from when it happened (the Pass). When I got home and watched TV, the first news reporst of it got it wrong and said that he was eaten at the Pass instead of Julien Rocks. Then I really s%$t myself. The 6 meter number I gave you was guesstimate- as I couldnot remember the exact amount, knowing as I did that it was very near the largest ever recorded, and as you posted that 7 meters is the record, then I will stand by six. The sharks dorsal fin is reported to have stood around five feet clear out of the water. Its overall bulk was refered to as that of a combi van. his name was something Ford. An american I think. Ford being rather a unlucky name in Byron Bay as the last person to be eaten by a shark was also named Ford. Byron Bay, being the most easterly point of Australia, just so happens to get both tropical and arctic currents. This caters for the massive diversity of marine life (one of the attractions of Julien Rocks), and also allows that great whites regularly cruise in with the cold currents. This also means that sometimes in summer, the water is FREEZING, and in winter, oh so WARM...

Ok I just did a little research. I found an old article that states the attack, but they call it 16 ft, ie only nearly 5 meters. This is not at all the first hand accounts that I heard, but, you get the picture. http://www.aarrgghh.com/no_way/honeyMoo.htm [EDIT] Also some more details, albeit blogized details (sketchy)... "Like after the fatal shark attack out at Julian Rocks, when a honeymooning couple found themselves in the path of a White Pointer. When the husband became the shark's breakfast, it was Diver Jeff who plunged into the water, swimming amongst chunks of flesh in search of the victim. Nine days later it was Diver Jeff who led a team of divers to search for remains, later describing to me the grizzly task of rolling the victim's shrivelled but intact head along the ocean floor and into a garbage bag. That afternoon I found Jeff at the Top Pub, drinking a beer and drawing diagrams, trying to ascertain at exactly what angle the shark might have bitten the man, whose legs, to Jeff's chagrin, were never found. Most of the divers in town underwent group counselling and talked it through for weeks to come, contemplating life and death under the sub-tropical sunshine. Jeff was just philosophical. "The poor guy was just out there having a bit of fun, and it's just a case of the dog in the back yard that bit him,"" [EDIT 2] and another forum post (again hinting the minor details of my story slightly innacurate.... damn) This attack occured at Byron Bay at the top of NSW. It is very rare for Great Whites to be around this area. John & Debbie Ford were on their honeymoon and went to a diving site called Spot X. They were experienced divers. They were hoping to see some of the famous Grey Nurse (Sand Tigers) sharks in the area. While under the diving group spotted a Great White. The group started to ascend up the anchor line and stopped at 5 metres to do a 3 minute safety stop. While they waited the Great White appeared under them. It was estimated at about 17 feet long. It started coming up towards Debbie Ford. John, her new husband pushed her out of the way and the shark took him. Debbie was taken away in hysterics. She later held a memorial service at the site for him. She said "He took his own life for me"... He was a hero and a good husband. I loved him dearly". A wreath was laid on the water. Just after the attack happened, fisherman & other dive boats went to the scene. The shark was still there and took a bait as soon as it was put into the water. For one and a half hours they fought with this shark trying desperately to get close enough to shoot it with a 303 rifle. During this struggle the shark vomited up the torso of John Ford. It finally bit through the line and escaped. The head of John Ford was found some days later on the bottom of the ocean. This seems by many accounts to be a freak accident. The area was teeming with fish and the shark should have been well fed. There are a number of stories told about this shark in the weeks that followed including that it died when it ate the anchor off a dive boat. It was also apparently seen floating and dead by a helicopter but this information cannot be confirmed.
