Use of many outboards

Guess they are used to go fast.

I am not an expert on high speed motor boats but i do know that multiple prop boats lose efficiency becourse of the drag from shafts. Outboard engine shafts have more shaft drag then inboard engines. Most high speed single hulled boats have only one shaft. So have large bulk carriers and tankers where efficiency also is very important. This is one of the reasons why surface piercing propellors were developed, their shaft is at water level so has almost no drag.

Read somewhere on the forum about the red boat by Ranchi. Those engines happened to be available so were used, they were more cheap then a new single engine with same hp.

Welly got it, good smuggler too (loose an engine it don't matter, harldly slows you down, can still outrun the Navy, Customs, Police etc!) More is better - maybe!

Smugglers

Welly, Walrus, how dare you say Ranchy is a smuggler!

Of course there are many reasons to use multiple props, reliability, maneuverability, compensating for the wheel effect are some of them. I just think that when efficiency and speed are your goal a single prop is better in most cases.

I think the pirate stole six boat outboard and fixed it to a sleek long hull....... economical situation, if one of the engine pop then they just go around and steal another.

The story is in the link. Boat owner working on his engine, it back fired igniting fumes and causing a fire. The guy has burns on his face and arms, had to be evacuated by ambulance helicopter.

At 15 of this month, a strange thing happened (again) in the Ciutadella port in Menorca; they call it the "rissaga" . The water suddenly goes completely away at low tide and then it comes again, really fast....not good for boats

This is really odd, because the Med has almost no tides (not more than 0.5m).
