"Violence between Dayak and Madurese has occurred several times in in West Kalimantan -- eight times in the last two decades. Ethnic tensions continue in West Kalimantan, where hundreds of people were killed and thousands displaced following fighting that began in late December 1996. … Bloody clashes between the indigenous Dayak people, migrants from Madura and the military started in early January 1997, and resulted in a death toll of over 500; the army admitted to 300 dead. The army sent in 3,000 troops to fight tribesmen, including six battalions of troops and the Army Strategic Reserve… Tensions between Dayaks, who make up 40 per cent of West Kalimantan's population and have converted to Christianity, and the Muslim Madurans have been fueled by fears that the migrants will take away land and jobs from the indigenous people. Dayak communities have been dispossessed as their traditional forest lands are appropriated by outsiders in government-supported resettlement, development and large-scale commercial enterprise schemes." http://www.fas.org/irp/world/para/dayak.htm The Madurese first arrived in West Kalimantan in the 1930's, but the numbers increased during the 1970's. This was the result of the Indonesian government's transmigration plan, which encouraged people to leave more populated islands such as Madura and Java for low populated islands such as Kalimantan. Little consideration was given to the indigenous Dayaks. As the rainforest was cut down and replaced by palm oil and coconut plantations, the indigenous tribes found themselves at the bottom of a complex hierarchy of different groups, unable to continue their traditional patterns of agriculture and slow to adapt new types of employment. (Economist, 1997) The Christian Dayaks now share the low end of the economic ladder with the Madurese. There are currently about 100,000 Madurese in various parts of Kalimantan and two million Dayaks from at least ten separate tribes. http://www.american.edu/projects/man...ce/kaliman.htm |

| Dayak are kind people The land of Borneo belong to The Dayak tribe or race that think dayak......... Race like Kenyah, Bahau, Benua, Tidung, Kayan, Modang, Punan, Iban and others' I have no info on........... the Mayan and the serious type muslim in the central kalimantan are different. These dayak regardless of religion will band together to wipe out any enemies that they think is a danger....... a meeting of Kenyah Lepoq Tao King gathered everybody in ancient days and made everyother king to swear under oaths and that still hold true until now. The will feast again only during war of extreme situation and condition. Not all dayak are Christian....... quite a big part also take up muslim believe and some still like to worship nature........ Now the madura had it comming as they grew in size and seized land own by the dayak without permission and played out politic agaisnt the native. The Dayak of course use the wait and see attitue until they think it is time to do something about it. Now the last warning of Madura and Dayak happened a few month ago with a ritual between 2 races with an oath to finished the business if the Dayak is offended again....... but this time would be the final...... so Madura i think is tip toe very softly in this region and would settle or disown any madura that created the problem. The Headhunter are fair people until a form of disgrace is openly felt by them. They are well oiled mandau(Blade) waiting for an open practice. I do not find any problem with them as I try to repay their kindness by calling in professional investor to open up plantation where they will benefit through plasma system. They have trust and believe Indonesia care and taken in Pancasila as a motto to live with, to regard all the same with different background and believe..... (Kalimantan Dayak) I have 4 headhunter chieftan on the table for my deal, as a broker, I was asked for help not the other way around........ I could have settle for south Kalimantan but still think East Kalimantan is better. WDH |

| pendulum rudder with a movable prop Interesting post! Looks like an combination of a pendulum rudder with a movable prop shaft. The engineering does not look very well executed, the "hinges" between the main and pendulum seem very close to each other. The bottom hinge could be much more near the prop. Even below the prop there is room for an additional hinge. This would make the whole thing much more strong and protect the prop. The whole contruction seems way to complex to compensate for any possible benefits. The picture was to taken in a museum, if you know where it is more information should be easy to get.
