I'll tell you why you haven't had a reply - they don't believe that anybody would be stupid enough to try rafting down one of the busiest waterways in England! Well if you DO go I'll look forward to reading about your death in the paper - what I will not be too happy about is reading about the poor sods who also got injured or even dead trying to save you in other words DO NOT EVEN THINK OF DOING THIS STUPID ACTIVITY WITHOUT FULL PERMISSION AND AT LEAST TWO WELL LIT SENSIBLY MANNED GUARD BOATS! If hints won't work maybe a strong warning will - but I doubt it.......sheesh!

    VKRUE Just another boat lover

    Hey Dom:

I'm sure that it's a beautiful river and all but, you really should just consider a different river that is a lot more peaceful & safe... regardless of what the port authorities say.

    Rafting the Tyne

When you reach the 'Coat Hanger' bridge check to see if there's an Opera House nearby. If so, it's not Newcastle - but Sydney.

And who recalls that Don MacLean 'hit' Durham Town...seem to remember he thought the river running through was the Tyne. (Tees actually). But just shows the confusion that awaits your trip. Good luck anyway - and have a Nookie Broon for me. :D

OK - double check. If they're singing 'Cushy Butterfield' you're still in Newcastle...:D

There is 5 bridges in Newcastle, and a Hotel called "Five bridges"

They have a green bridge called the "green bridge".

Very imaginative the Jeordies, and there is an old cross channel ferry underneath it converted into a disco. That still there?

What are your plans as you exit the Tyne estuary?

Take an aerial look using http://maps.live.com/.

Assuming you haven't been nicked as a hazard to navigation by the Old Bill, you have to run the gauntlet of commercial shipping which is unlikely to be able to avoid running you down.

Mark Twain, it seems, has a lot to answer for.:D

PS You will have to pay boating fees, remember Death and Taxes?
