"246 survivors have been pulled from rough seas between PNG's second largest city, Lae, and New Britain after their ferry sank. A total of 372 people were on board the 22-year-old Japanese-built ferry, MV Rabaul Queen, when it sank near the end of its 20-hour journey."

Should not have sailed by the looks, with the weather the way it was.

"The company said the cause of the disaster remained unclear, but National Weather Service chief Sam Maiha told Papua New Guinea's Post-Courier newspaper that shipping agencies had been warned to keep ships moored this week because of strong winds."

This wikipedia page suggests the ferry took 4 hours to sink after it capsized.

"5 meter swells and 45 mph winds where the Rabaul Queen sank. The 1983 vessel had been on the same route for past 11 years."

"One report states the vessel tilted over three times before it capsized"
