Paul's new boat...

Never let it be said that people don't change their minds...!

Since I am not going to be able to get the year off work required to build the steel boat for the North West Passage trip, I thought a little solo ocean racing might be interesting.

So I bought an old Open 50... Well you would wouldn't you..

Build by Alumarine in France, she's 50ft, Aluminium, designed by Auzepy Breneur and before she left to win her class in the OSTAR in 1992 weighed in at 7.3T. She has twin rudders, a canard, 3/4 T of water ballast and draws a conservative 2.5m with a hollow fin and lead bulb.. Her interior is light and functional - but not a stipped out race boat so I shall enjoy cuising her - and due to the expense of berths in Barcelona probably living on her too! The "round the cans" could be a lot of fun singlehanded... but there are a number of 3 day races that I will be entering.

Any ideas on articulating that bowsprit would be welcome too!

Dunno really, gives me something to do when single handing in case I run out of rope to pull...

Nope, she's not Nandor Fa's old boat. But she came 1st in Class in the Route du Ruhm '90 and 1st in class OSTAR in '92. I bought her from the guys that had her built for that.

Back to the Bowsprit Question... (should this go somewhere else??)

The sprit has no structural implcations, it is just to get the tack of the asymetrical out. It only has a bobstay and is unloaded except in use.

My latest thoughts are as per the attached pic using pipe inside and a sleeve outside. Combined with either a quick disconect tensioner on the bobstay or a rope block pulling the middle of the bobstay in the direction of the root of the sprit

The outer (green) sleeve and the inner (red) pipe welded to the rest of the sprit so it just fits neatly over the end of the stub on the boat and is pinned.

This seems to be a quick inexpensive solution, - I dont need to be able to do any of this at sea, comments anyone?
