I have two rules when it comes to boats:

    1. You can't have too many boats
    2. You can't have too many boats

Feet and inches is actually a very practical system of measurement for working with, when you're building something. Since a foot is 12 inches, it can be divided by two, three, four or six and still come up with whole inches.

And inches can be divided indefinitely: into halves, quarters, eighths, sixteenths, thirty-seconds, etc.

It's also handy sometimes to express a length or width strictly in inches instead of feet and inches, especially if you're going to be dividing it up or multiplying it.

I can see how it would drive you crazy if you weren't raised with it, though.
