I found no substantiation that George Washington said "prairie wagons" but that does not mean he couldn't have said it. I also found no proof that FDR kissed Stalin's ass, but I still believe he probably did.

Sorry; 'Washington could have said it" isn't good enough. Is that supposed to be the new standard of proof?

Usually, people say the 'liberty speech' quote containing the phrase 'prairie wagon' is part of Washington's Address to the Second Session of the First U.S. Congress. But the Second Amendment Foundation says they've also seen it attributed to his Speech to Congress of January 7, 1790, printed in the Boston Independent Chronicle, January 14, 1790; the Federalist Paper No. 53, published in the New York Packet on February 12, 1788 (which was actually written by James Madison); and even Debates and Proceedings in the Convention of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, 1785.

That's at least four sources claimed for the quote, and it's in none of them. I'd say that's pretty good evidence it's complete bs. But we already knew that just from the anachronistic references, and from comparing the sentence structure, vocabulary and general style to Washington's known speeches.

It's a joke, Hoyt. A bad but funny joke, played on people who suck up anything attributed to famous dead guys--as long as it's something they want to hear.

July 4th in the desert? That sounds like a good idea. Matter of fact, I may do it hat and all....

Did you do anything special today, or just kick back?

I am just laying about with a swollen post-root canal jaw. Oxycodone good. Pain bad.

We men are said to never grow out from childhood, which is the age of illusions. I'm suspecting some women never grow out of puberty, which is the age of frustrations....

The Cid who ruled Valencia has departed from the earth
At Pentecost. His mercy may Christ to him extend.
To us all, just men or sinners, may He yet stand our friend.
Lo! the deeds of the Cid Campeador! Here takes the book an end.
The Poem of El Cid
Cantari
