| ocean conditions are changing due to Rapid Global Climate Shift Has the Gulf stream stopped ? Quote:
http://www.charlotteobserver.com/201...igger-and.html Changes in current strength ( gulf stream down by 30% and I'm still researching one site that claims the gulf stream has stopped ) and ocean temp ( up 1°F in the over the last 100 years ) are also being studied and mapped as both these parameters play key roles in ocean dynamics http://info.themicroeffect.com/?p=1011 http://www.mcclatchydc.com/2010/07/0...ng-health.html Quote:
how will this effect yachting overall and on a more selfish note, how will it effect my own retirement plans ? As I have time I'll include more and more papers documenting the changes. cheers B

| That is not true. As a navigator I have used Pilot Charts for years. There isn't such a radical change. The data goes back centuries. The first publication date for the modern style pilot charts was 1847. The data shows periodic changes like the ones that are happening now. "Rapid Global Climate Shift" is one of the new catch phrases by activists. It does not have a rigorous scientific definition.

| I very much doubt the author of that article could recite the second law of thermodynamics. In Patrick O'Brian's carefully researched Stephen-Maturin series, there are numerous references to dramatic, extreme or otherwise unusual climatic conditions in both hemispheres around the time Bonaparte was trying to take over the world. Those references are straight from the Ship's Logs of British naval officers over two hundred years ago. It's time we got our news from climatologists, instead of twenty-somethings with a major in Communications. |

| I wonder how this will change the classification societies rules. Vessels will need to be able to handle heavier seas. @Billy. All weather, hot or cold, good or bad, is driven by heat. More heat = more extreme weather. Same reason you get thunderstorms and hail when it's hot. The hot weather combines with the wet air to make violent storms and hail in the middle of summer. |

| Hail is formed when adiabatic cooling transforms water vapor in a rising air mass into ice.

| No chance the Gulf Stream has stopped. Just ask the crew of that 90' Gunboat that lost power and sail raising ability. They were fighting against it about 2 weeks ago.

| Of course. Warm air rises. That is what makes adiabatic cooling. As warm air rises, relative humidity increases decreasing ability of water vapor to stay uncondensed. After a wild roller coaster ride in the atmosphere, the stone grows in size until gravity holds sway over updraft resulting in precipitation of icy spheroids.

| its is very hard to argue with the overwhelming amount of data to support my previous statements. You may not want to believe it, but the times they are a changin and it aint looking good kids, Britain faces big chill as ocean current slows to 1/4 of its former strength http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/new...icle520013.ece ocean currents slow causing warmer ocean http://www.noaanews.noaa.gov/stories/s861.htm Thermohaline Circulation and the Effects of Global Warming http://sitemaker.umich.edu/section2g...ocean_currents Quote:

| yes, as do a few other factors, but the main driver of vertical currents is temp and salinity which are both directly related to the current warming trend of Rapid Global Climate Shift. The portion of the gulf stream that is slowing, stopped, stuttering, or moved ( I really need to weed through all the latest and figure out if that has been determined yet and if so to what degree. ) is apparently one that moderates western European weather. Not good for Europe and specifically England which will be and is being effected first. cheers B A documented ten day halt in parts of the gulf stream 04 Quote:

| The Gulf Stream is still flowing . I think that many of those numbers are chosen to prove an already decided upon position. That is politics and not science. They decide to pick something to blame and overlook anything else. For example, historical climate change patterns, Sun activity, volcano eruptions.
