| New Vucuum Infusion Method US patent 7,273,576 New Vacuum Infusion Method After nine years of R&D, I have received a US patent for a new method of hull and fuselage construction. The method uses perforated architectural wood veneer with layers of carbon, aramid or hybrid reinforcements. Each piece of veneer is overlapped with adjacent piece about 3/8” to ¾” depending on the specific project. The perforations in the veneer and the small continuous triangle that is formed by the overlapping veneers allows the hull to be vacuum infused without the need of expense of infusion media. The overlap of the veneer greatly increases the stiffness of the hull while adding little weight. I have built solo canoes based on a stretched “Wee Lassie”. I increased the length from 10’-6” to 13’-6 to increase its capacity. Raw hulls can be as light as 10.5 lbs and are strong enough to pull form the mould and paddle without gunnales or thwarts. My lightest finished 13’-6” canoe to date weights 14.7 lbs with wood gunnales and varnish. The full patent can be viewed at uspto.gov/patfit/index.html. The patent number is 7,273,576. | Hello George, I believe the answer is yes. I have built a solo canoe with single layers 3 oz. S glass, Veneer, 5.7 oz aramid, and Veneer. It weights approximately 4.9 oz per square foot and had incredible flexural strength. I sold my 1962 365 porsche recently to pay for my patent. What porsche(s) do you own? Allan |

| not to method my poor typing/ spelling. Vacuum not Vucuum Thanks for the comment. The patent is for a method of vacuum infusing hulls and fuselages. The patent is for the simple construction of complex shapes using architectural wood veneer and modern reinforcements such as carbon, aramid etc, essentially making high strength plywood of any shape that is internally strengthened by the reinforcements. The fact that the pieces of veneer are overlapped further stiffens the hull, negated the need for the pieces to be perfectly aligned and best of all can be infused without infusion media. | Allan, The technique appears impressive (and the boat is simply gorgeous). I haven't had a chance to read the patent yet but I will do so soon. I don't see a website for your shop listed on your profile. Can you offer us some more information on these canoes - other models you produce, pricing, etc?

| Matt, Thanks very much for the comments. I will have a website soon. I am currently working on a plug to make a mold for my next model, a tandem which will be 15'-6" x 34" x12.5" deep at its centerline. The estimated wieght of the finished canoe will be plus/minus 19 to 20 pounds. The next model will be a small tender that should come out at 30 Pounds or so. Take care allan |
