| Pardon my french, you sometime see two junk rig sail pointing in opposite direction forming a large wind catch area.....?

I never heard the expression "goose span" either, but it makes perfect sense when you explain it. In America we call sailing downwind with one sail set far out to port and one to starboard, "sailing wing and wing". Slight difference in words, same idea. |
