motor types used to generate electricity 0n marine vessels

does anyone know what type of motor ie; transverse flux, ac synchronous, dc motor, is used to generate the electricity in cruise ships?
i no that ac is disributed on cruise ships but dc can be converted in to ac. i just realy want to know what is the most efficient way of generating the electricity on any marine vessel. anyone recommed a good website for information on this as well?

Don't know about cruise ships, but the US Navy uses AC generators (except submarines). Ours were 1500 KW 3600 RPM (60 Hz) 3 phase self exciting (DC, perm. magnet) I would assume cruise ships are the same. Inverters = more weight, more room, more maintenance, more $. Could be wrong tho.
