When you leave the chain, the light line and the foam balls you have the most common system in modern marinas.
But this is a neat solution and the easier handling balances the slightly higher investment.

Thanks Cornelis.

Richard,

For my boat in Jamaica we did something similar to what CDK did, but have three radial blocks chained to a central small block. The mooring (using dyneeme) line then attaches dirrectly to the center block. The non-stretch line in this application is offset by the central block that lifts as load is applied. It is complicated but works great, the boat has survived 3 hurricanes on the mooring without so much as budging.

I have looked at the helical ones, but driving them into solid bottoms is impossible, since the act of drilling out a hole for them weakens the bottom they are using to secure too. The other option I have seen in this situation is to drill into the bedrock then place steel rods into the hole, inject waterproof epoxy or concrete and attach the rod to the bouy.

Where effective I would imagine the helix would be easier to install, but its limitations won't let it work out for everyone.
