Maybe this sticker should become mandatory on the bridge as a note from NA's and builders. And a special note should go to the ship's owners that they should take care of the Upper Nut that they assigned as Captain . . . . . . .

Costa Europa's Captain killed three crew members on February 26, 2010 in Sharm el-Sheikh and used the wind as an excuse while other cruise ships canceled Sharm el-Sheikh that day because of the wind . . . .

MS Thomson Dream, the former Costa Europa ---> 2010 dock collision
It's said in post #303 and #820 that Schettino was the Captain but I couldn't find confirmation or disconfirmation about that...

Google "Costa Europa Sharm el-Sheikh" or "Costa Europa accident" or "Costa Europa pier" or "Costa Europa dock" for more . . .

    Cheers,
    Angel

I'd be surprised if the nut in this latest case doesn't become of lock-nut, for a few years anyway.

It is the apparatus behind the wheel that is always the problem.

I was on the C Europa in july 2009, see attached picture
The Sharm el Sheikh incident happened in feb 2010 shorly before the Europa was leased/sold to Thomson

I don't know what was wrong with the previous trials to post the picture but now it worked. Look at the tan-faced captain, but the smile was pure show.:)

Picture of stbd side prop. in what looks like a slight 'tunnel' with the end of the huge skeg showing the last of the 3 thrusters housed in it.

    Starboard propeller.
    Fixed pitch, 5 blades.
    Inward turning (counter CW).

    Port propeller is therefore CW.

Demonstrates that general info on the web is very often not reliable...

As I posted earlier, inboard turning wheels are normal on DP equipped vessels. I believe probably all liners are DP, so they can dock and undock by computer. Requires less ship handling skill.

Disadvantage of inboard turning wheels, is larger turning radius and more side slip. It's the side slip they want when docking. Intentional side slip is called "walking". Many captains like a boat that "walks"!
This contributed to Concordias disaster and may help explain the undamaged stabilizer.

Just out of curiosity, are the "vessel not under command" (red over red) lights shown in the nighttime rescue photograph switched on automatically when the control system senses total lack of power, or must they be switched on manually? It would be interesting to know when they went on.

    Cheers,

    Earl
