Yes, I think looking for design flaws in the ship is probably not the most likely line of enquiry in this case.

One thing I hate in life is when irresponsible people acting foolishly cause the rest of us to be over-regulated. I only say this in general, as I don't know enough about this ship or accident.

These ships do look like tubs. But would the Costa Concordia have tipped over if the captain had not beached her sideways?

Is there a detailed chart of the "uneven bottom" where the Costa Concordia settled?

What is the slope or rock footprint directly under the ship?

I found these old photos. This was about as far from a luxury cruise as you can get. However, the ports of call were exotic, the food was excellent, the bunks were comfortable, the crew seemed competent and I think I recall that we had a very thorough life boat drill. This was a small ship and the Pacific is a vast ocean but I did not feel unsafe.

I can not explain it, BPN.
I'm sorry but my English is broken ... as was pointed out to me.
This morning I went to see the ship.
is a spectacle at once great and astonishing.

oh don't take me so seriously - your English is much, much better than my Italian!:) - but you have to expect some razzing when you suggest things like battleship plating on cruise ships...

safety is not a problem of size, but of boat.

I built a shallow-water boat type sjx boat, 7 meters long, 2 turbine engines with 70 hp.
I guarantee that not only is unsinkable, it can navigate flooded: it sinks a maximum of 8 inches.

For the rocky bottom of the river, the keel is 4 mm aluminum, coated with Teflon was 5mm: can creep smoothly when happens.
Will post photos of the work.

With the boat you posted, I'm sure you've done a wonderful holiday.
Avoiding a typhoon, the risks are low.
However, I am sure that the boat was not overloaded by old people and childrens, as is rightly in the crusade.

I posted at http://www.boatdesign.net/forums/boat-design/simulating-costa-concordia-41365.html if the large job of modeling and simulating the damage could be done, it would be interesting to know what role beaching it sideways had. With the visible damage, how long would the ship have stayed afloat and would it have remained stable if not beached?

As you read, is the news on Sunday that the HD CCTV is not recorded.
Missing components of the black box, which apparently had problems.
Schettino said to have denounced these things for 15 days.
What is certain is that 20 minutes after impact, the ship bend on the port side, the side of the hole.
in the future will be difficult to know if the stranding maneuver was intended or if was the case for wind and tide.

A week after the collision, brought 24 tons of boulders to block the ship.
