[quote=nettersheim;520249]According to the SOLAS rules (International rules from IMO), life-boats on passenger vessels should not e installed at more than 15 meters from the lowest waterline. This rule is a very good one and is coming from experience. It is easier to lower life-boat from such level.

My God!
Experience of ships like the Titanic, far more stable than the Concord.

We know how sink a cruise ships: rotate on its side and sink.

If the vessel rotates on its side, lifeboats cannot be put in water.
On the one hand, they rub against the side down.
On the other hand are crushed by the boat and move away.

Not only is it obvious, but look at what survivors of the Concordia says.

If safety rules are these, which were fine when the ship is sinking like the Titanic, we are really spoiled!

Seems obvious to me. Not airliner slides into inflatabable rafts. But... Articulated ships! ATB liners. Tug sufficient in size to accept and shelter entire complement of passengers and crew, in an emergency. Luxury quarters and playrooms on barge section. Safety refuge lounges similar to airliner cabins on tug.
Maintain traditional lifeboats and rafts as well. Redundancy, but tug and barge can separate if either is damaged or on fire. IMHO

Basically the vessel should sink more or less vertical and in a certain time. The problem is the extent of the theoretical damage used in the damage stability calculations as already mentioned. If the damage extent is more than calculated (which looks to be the case for COSTA CONCORDIA) then nobody knows what will happen.

Regarding life-boats, there are other evacuation means available on the market, like vertical chutes. Not much used in the cruise vessel market.

The problem is that ships have never been made so high before.
The problem is that no one sinks vertically, maybe broken into two sections, but all revolve on one side.
The problem is that THERE IS NOT ADEQUATE SAFETY!

Wish I could trust that were true.

Here is some of the information available to the crew on the bridge of a typical cruise ship. Great stuff if you are traveling in normal traffic lanes. I doubt they could react fast enough if a hazard was noted while skimming along a rocky shore.

My wife says even more than his legal problems, Schettino is suffering from the worlds derision. She believes he is the "mirame mirame ' type. Thinks he's handsome, debonair, and admirable. A higher creature. She says if he wasn't such a coward, he'd commit suicide.

This is normal stuff for officers of the watch ...
They are trained for that...
The issue is that you have not to be 200 m of rocks if you are not in manoeuvring conditions as port/terminal entering...
