Kite to wind on one line

Hi ladies, gentle and other men

I have a question for the sailing and sail and aerodynamic experts (LOL which is probably everyone)

A kite that you fly, right, the thing you flew when you were little and in school on your dad's expensive fishing rod and reel you stole because it had long strong line on it

Can one make a kite to fly to wind - say up towards 90 deg somewhere ?

One can sail a car on land to wind, because it has traction. You can sail a boat to wind because it has a daggerboard or keel.

Now with a kite there is no media the kite can use to fly to wind - except the single line you are holding on to.

How can one use this line, or offset it so the kite would want to fly at an angle away from you away from downwind... ??

I was kind of imagining a lob sided kite where the line gets routed to it's front through a wire offset point, but you still needs something that would want to suck it away from you.

Any ideas... and what angles can one expect.

Hi Fanie,

Moving the "tail" on the bottom of the kite, say an inch or two would slightly
lop side it enough to draw it to one side ie: left or right.
I've had this happen by accident.

It may compromise height a little though.

just a thought,
DE

Hi, Fanie-I may misunderstand you so pardon me ahead of time. A kite like the kind kiteboarders use can sail very well upwind-is that what you were wondering? And can be adapted to boats fairly well....

Sorry I'm actiually talking about a normal kite one would fly on a line like the ones kids fly.

I've seen some flying to wind, and some stunt kites do weird stuff.

All I want is a normal kite you can fly on one line that would want to fly beside me instead of only downwind.
