Quite interesting - shows (at least in part) the other side of the story (note that I DO NOT condone piracy).

I don't buy into the argument that for most of these pirate incursions it is better to be unarmed and immediately surrender. For the most part these people aren't political ideologues, communist rebels, hardened congolese killers, etc. They for the most part are opportunistic fishermen, who have taken up piracy.

If they think there is a good chance you are going to put up a resistance, or one of them may get killed. Its not worth the effort.

The first rule of being a predator/hunter is to not expend more resources than you get (or get hurt/killed).

First rule of prey is to not look like a easy target. If they are desperate, show them that trying to make a meal of you is going to be more trouble than it is worth.
