| Insane Catamaran I dont know if you guys have seen this before http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qp9Wv...eature=related but if I were the harbour master the skipper would have been in jail for recklessness and endangering the lives of his crew It was sheer luck that he got thru as his rudders would have been airborne

| Wow! Thanks for the video! I'm with you Manie-he could have sailed a bit longer and totally avoided doing that-instead he risks everything. He didn't just risk his boat and those aboard he risked the people who would certainly try to rescue him and his crew. Damn poor judgement!

| Whatever we think of his judgment, I see no reason to punish someone just for trying something risky, especially if they pull it off. There are already too many nannies in the world Hell-bent on protecting us from ourselves.

| Commodore Munroe was well-known for shooting bars with his sharpies Kingfish and Egret, instead of taking the long way around.

Troy, this has nothing to do with a nanny state protecting us from ourselves-at least I don't think it does. I think taking risks is one of the great human endeavors but when risk taking becomes foolhardy-putting OTHER people in jeopardy- I think there is a problem. But "punnishment" seems too strong-maybe just some neg rep......(of some kind).

| im not a sailor or a good boatman but i think what he did was awesome. i have never been able to tell a good story about something i did safely, its always about something crazy that just happened to work out or didnt work out i have the scars and broken bones to prove it. scars and broken bone add character to the body. |

And if we forbade people to take any risk that might also endanger a rescue team, we'd have to outlaw a whole lot of mountain climbing, spelunking, polar treks, solo voyages, balloon rides, etc. Not all the wanna-be nannies are in government, either. There was a rather gruesome accident at an offroad race in the desert northwest of here last week, and we're arse-deep in people demanding that all off-road activity, organized or otherwise, be shut down in response.

| If you are going to crawl around in caves, wear the right kit. Remember spare batteries and a long rope to find your way back. If you are going to go off-road racing, you know you are in a rally prepared car and abide by the organizers rules. You know the risks. We cannot have laws that ban motor racing because of the fatal accidents that happen world wide every weekend. BUT if you want to go surfing please use a surfboard and not a cruising catamaran with two regular spade rudders. Its like going bungee jumping with your grannies panty elastics or better still grandpa's old tractor tube that he kept for the grand-children for sunday swims in the dam. This was poor judgement fueled by lazyness to sail a little further. Absolutely NO SKILL just 100% luck. Maybe not next time.

| Gotta disagree Manie. The crew at the time were in a better position to assess risks and skills than anyone on this forum. They thought they could do it, and they were right. Say it had gone wrong, both rudders and engines had failed to steer, and they broached. Then there is a chance that the wave may be big enough to flip them and they end up wet and embarrassed. So what? You are welcome to say it was the worst of bad seamanship in your opinion, but bringing in the harbour master and advocating bans and fines - thats nanny state. |

Who knows though, in a few days you will have your election results, could go the other way. Us Yanks are competing hard to crash our economy and take away any liberty/responsibility from our citizens too, we'll see who gets there first!
