Flatland by Edwin A. Abbott published 1884

Edwin A. Abbot wrote a book called Flatland in 1884.

It is available online: http://www.alcyone.com/max/lit/flatland/ i read it many years ago, did not read it again but can remember it starts with a character living in a one dimensional world that has a first encounter with a two dimensional one. Part of the book is encouraging you to think about multi-dimensional worlds. Diquised as a love story this was a very popular book and it left a cult of followers having competitions like "how to build the best two dimensional lock".

Founders of the site mentioned in the start of this thread must have been inspired by Flatland also.
