Thanks for having me!

I see that a Finnish are the first to chat with, feels great as I'm a Swede living elsewhere. I plan to buy myself a sail boat end spend the rest of my life at sea. My uncle spent winter 1940 in the front I'm still with a knife he changed with a Finnish companion. I've never been there it's said to be a beautiful country with many lakes, one day I'll come to see for myself.
I like to wish you and other members a pleasant ending of 2008, and a Happy New Year!!!!!!

Happy new year to you too. I met a friend in arms of your uncle in Norway -85 while fishing salmon. (there weren't so many friendly units -40 in Finland) or maybe it was your uncle who knows..

I'm actually building one to make the very same thing as you are.. I'll blow the whistle and salute when we'll find the same mooring..

Distans, welcome to the mad house, hope you get out of here what you expect, on a whole a pretty good bunch of guys - of course every now and then you get a bad egg in the basket, but amongst the seagoing fraternity there ain't to many - remember in this world theres two kinds of people........those who go to sea (or have spent many years going to sea) and the rest! No doubt over the years you'll find what I mean, best of luck to you in all you do, happy new year and may 2009 be a better year than the last one, no matter how the last one fared!

Thanks guys it's such a great Christmas gift to find this site!

TeddyDiver: I just checked the knife it says, "Minne av Tore fronten 1939-40". He had left us at -85. I remember him telling stories for me as a child from the war. He saw it as an honour to serve with the Finnish as a part of 'Frivillig Svenskarna' as the Swedish volunteers was named. My father died when I was a child, Tore took well care of me. He was such a caring man and he has been such a great influence for me.

If we end up at the same mooring we'll have a great time. Prepare your self for I use to treat guests with meatballs as I've learned from my mother who was a chef.

I'm thinking about how it will be out there, today when piracy has become so common, I like to have a flame thrower to use against these water bandits. This is one of the things I like to found out - How to defend myself.

I have experienced a piracy attempt in Brazil, a fishing boat speed up when we was flying spinnaker in downwind making good speed. My wife was at the wheel I turned away from them they kept a distance of about 30 Yards and acted as I unsecured a gun and made made a movement as if I was putting it back in the belt and had my skirt covering it. At the same time Thomas the boat owner showed his unshaven face in cabin door. They saw that we was at least two guys at the boat my wife handled the wheel at the moment. They discussed and argued after a few minutes they turned back from where they came. This happen in Brazil since then things has gone from bad to worse especially southern Caribbean.

I intend to figure out how to arm myself to battle these sea-rats. They will wish that they had met the devil when I defend myself.

masalai: Thanks yeah I'll hang around and 'socialise', hope I have something in the luggage that others have use for. Australians are nice chaps I made some nice days on Bali with some Australian it was great fun.

safewalrus: How lovely to be welcomed by a Brit as well! You can't imagine what you Brits have meant for me the past years. You're a Good people and I have a lot to give back to you. I've always felt a home coming feeling when I visit you, you're such a nice people easy to get a long with. I've had Brits as crew in yachts I sailed, never had a problem the opposite. I have spent some time at sea when I had a chance to get of my land work.

Thanks Guys! I'll contribute with knowledge that makes boating safer. I'm looking forward to dig around at the Forum. For now Bye!!

Distans when you come to learn about using firearms (guns etc) learn from an expert -not a fly by night who thinks he knows everything!

Remember its not the gun that kills but the idiot behind the trigger! A lot of times you don't need to pull the trigger but when you do by God you better know what your doing, it's never half measures with guns!

Oh yes, firearms are beautiful bits of kit that can sort out a lot of problems -in the hands of the experts! (there's a few of those on here) but can be damn dangerous in the hands of a fool (and there's even more o' them about) Take care and I wish you luck!! Have a Great New Year

You must spread some Reputation around before giving it to safewalrus again. but then you know the drill, and sane sensible advice...

That is the major reason I dislike carrying firearms - - too many fools who think "shoot first" and a quick draw resolves all disputes.... I think of my 18 months working around the Waghi valley region near Mt Hagen, PNG... It was estimated that there were more AK47's (Kalashnokov's) in that area with a population of less than a million people than the entire weaponry in the PNG defence and police forces armouries.... I could travel into regions where the the police couldn't and advised them of the mood in those areas.... Where a level of "anarchy" and collapse of law and order exists, carrying firearms can be a significant disadvantage....

Yes I agree with you both I know it's dangerous in the hands of someone with short temper but when your out there by your own and attacked by evil people you got to be prepared.

I'm used with fire arms after more than 30 years of sport shooting as well as skeet. A gun can be used against you after being disarmed, that happen to Sir Peter Blake outside Belem in the Amazon river. He was disarmed and killed with his own gun, when he run up on deck to with his gun in his hand to see what was going on when he heard people entering his yacht in the middle of the night out side a customs station closed at night. He was waiting to clear out custom next day, in his last note in the log he wrote. What am I doing here!

We have a right to defend ourself but you're right it's dangerous and your own weapon could be used against you.

When we was targeted we didn't have any weapon at the boat, I acted as if I had something under the shirt. I believe it helped us and of course we was two grown up sailors with female companions.

I hope to learn from others how they have prepared themselves and attacks they managed to avoid.

I maybe should do this thread else where? I'll look around (holidays haven't had time to make myself at home yet,! .

I want to try skeet shooting for the first time this spring. If you want to start a new thread for that I could use some pointers. All I have ever shot is a small handgun at the range.

I have fired and used competently most weapons from 0.177 bore through to 105mm and all I got was tinitis (constant 24/7 cicada's screaming in my ears) and significant deafness giving me an understanding that firearms are deadly weapons, and if you carry one then you deserve to die as the victim of another gun carrying fool who has a faster trigger finger and less conscience to inhibit the killing of others....

masalai-lol!

We use protectors over here - my cicadas originates from a marriage. If I'd known I kept the ear defenders on at home as well - I finally got rid of her! Men that was a dangerous piece of meet!

Aware of the dangerous 'femme fatale' I went into the trap again - relapse marriage! But you know women, you can't live with them or without them.

Yeah I know what you think, he's a flat headed & slap shoulder, it's even worse!

My advice is to become a member in a club or organisation that has a shooting range with, Tower, Box & Field thrower. In Sweden, hunting associations or clubs are the place to look for. They educate, give lessons in how to aim (use to say keep a VW buggy in front of the the target) and it's the best place to start then you can find out if it's something that you like. Nowadays it has become very expensive for those who like to be good which means a lot of money in amo and clay-pigeon.

Open a thread if you feel you need further guidance and info.

Distans 52, The only protectors known during my time in the army were the heavy duty condoms on issue - black and made of old bicycle tubes....
