In my thought (poorly stated), this word is not important.

My interest is in the level of competition between political parties for policy direction in the United States.

During my lifetime I see a rise in the partisan bickering and the degree to which this stops progress of legislative postures against the evolving needs in the US.

I believe that the view of one mans life time is too short to understand the issue.
I note two things- this bickering has been present in our political discourse for many many generations, two- it may well be a continued example of the strength of our system.

Partisan impasse now?
Perhaps- at least that is how most view the issue.
Maybe this cycles like most anything else..

The media turns the political process into a combination beauty pageant, WWW wrestling match with perfectly coiffed candidates throwing eye pokes over income tax filings while uttering the word PATRIOT..

. Perhaps restrict television coverage and force candidates to campaign and articulate policy with the written word

Our founding fathers WANTED it to be difficult to pass laws. And to repeal them. Originally it was MUCH more difficult. Transportation and communication was slow and difficult. Yet, original congressmen and senators were required to vote "Under Instruction" from their state legislatures. They were representatives originally. Not law-makers.

They also wanted our laws to be short single issue laws easy to understand. They warned us about combining multiple issues in one law, seeing it as an open door to corruption. No law should be more than one or two pages, certainly not thousands, or even hundreds. And we certainly shouldn't pass a law without knowing what's in it!

Nancy Pelosi said, "We have to pass the bill so you can find out what is in it". That is out of order!

 

If it's difficult for 2 people to agree, howmuch more difficult is it for two BODIES of people to agree. So we have the house and the senate. If by some miracle they Do agree and pass a law, then we have another chance to stop it, in the person of the president and his veto. If he also lets the law pass, we have the hope the supreme court will declare it unconstitutional!
Seeing as how our governments designers INTENDED to put every feasible obstacle in the way of over burdening laws and government, How did we get into this current mess?
