I need an air brake to simulate the propeller and you would be amazed how much air it could stir around.

Maintenance of the chain was an issue and the nylon cord did not last very long so it now just has 10kg weights fitted to the pedals through pulleys enabling them to be lifted and lowered. Has reduced maintenance requirements. So if you make one this is the recommended approach. You can easily alter the weights to change the effort. The speed of stroke has to be limited as there is a tendency for the weights to overshoot on the upstroke and the rope lose tension on the downstroke if you go more than about 60cps.

I have a TV set up in front of it and run ship videos when I exercise. Not a bad substitute for being on one of the boats but I can exercise any night when the lake is out of bounds.

One of the benefits of aging is my diminished short term memory. This means by the time I get to the last episode of the Onedin Line (I have the boxed set) I can start all over again and most of it is new to me.

I also have Water World and sometimes go through it on a long training session.
