have a huge prop - what now?

Hello everyone.
I have a giant propeller that was left in my building about 11 years ago by an old tenant. I have no idea what to do with it and hope someone here might be able to point me in the right direction.

It’s brand new, still in the original wooden crate and never opened.

Stenciled on the side is:

Bn 04320

Masse 118*112*69cm
Brutto 415kg
Netto 322kg


I have been parking next to this thing for 10 years. The building just wants it gone, but no one can move it, so here it has sat – protecting the left side of my truck from dents.

Any help would be appreciated.

In cases like this one usually asks to see a picture of the prop.

But right now I'd be more curious to see a pic of this tenant who managed to steal a 415 kg prop from an italian ship and drag it to his home.

I have a pic of the crate, but I'm not sure how to post it. I can take more, I guess. The previous tenant didn’t steal it, his company owned the ship that it was going on. I think the shaft is here too. It’s also in a huge crate. It has literally been sitting in our garage since we moved in – about 11 years ago.

Well, anyways, If you post a pic of the prop and the detail of the stenciled part, it would be useful. I might try to see if someone here recognizes the builder.

118x112 are probably diameter and pitch (46.5"x44"), so you have one pretty big souvenir in your backyard. Scrape bronze costs around 1.7-1.8 $/kg, by the way.

Or if you have a local sailing club / motorboat club, give it to them as an ornament for the clubhouse. There was a time when there was one outside the front door of every clubhouse, but the scallies would knick it these days for the scrap value.

Oh, that was made by Cantieri Navali Picchiotti, a renown boatbuilding yard from Viareggio, Italy.

Damn, I wish I was nearby so I could pick it up. It'll look great in the front yard, though the other half may make me remodel the guest bathroom for spite. Everyone needs 700 pound lawn art.

If it is bronze, there could be some value in it as scrap and possibly lots more if someone wants a screw that big?

That prop was most probably custom-made in Germany (german text on the crate, in this case the word Masse does not mean mass but rather Maße which is dimensions), you can contact Piening-Propeller and ask them if they have something about BN 04320 whoch could probably be a manufacturing number in their books.
The other numbers should be the size of the shipping crate (metric), total shipping weight and weight of the item inside the crate.

By the way, instead of scrapping that piece of art you might start of building something suiteable to attach it to. At least you have something to start with... ;-)
