| Though this thread is so far off of it's original topic it's almost comical, I agree that a shotgun is simply the most effective weapon on a boat. There was some comment about a 6 shot tube magazine not being enough but for ducks? I'd like to address that first, even if the intruder is head to tow in kevlar, one shot center-mass of 00 Buck and they're lucky if their ribs aren't broken, but they sure as hell aren't coming back for more. No kevlar (which is far, far more likely) and you have a big mess to clean up. But what about a threat you see long coming? Let's say you're fired on or are presented with armed combatants on an approaching vessel.. Great, it's called a slug, and the procedure is called a "slug changeover". Within 100 yards they've got nearly a 1" hole in their hull followed by ten more, unless it's a steel hull, and heavy steel at that. Not to mention bye-bye outboard motor... The shotgun works so well here because it's so versatile, 2 or 3 types of ammunition and you're good, but I'd also have a reliable pistol in a caliber widely available such as 9mm, more on that later... Whether or not to have guns? "No free man shall ever be debarred the use of arms. The strongest reason for the people to retain the right to keep and bear arms is, as a last resort, to protect themselves against tyranny in government" -- Thomas Jefferson Enough said in my opinion but the nay-sayers always use sad stories to prove their points. The problem is that these stories always seem to involve some irresponsible fool that hasn't the damnedest idea how to effectively use/store/care for the TOOL in their hand. 90% of using a firearm for self defense is knowing when to use it, both the example of the man and his fiancé and the friendly boatboy can be said to fall in-line here. Also both examples highlight that the shooters were not following the most simple firearm safety procedures because neither of them identified their targets and both pointed the gun at something that they ultimately didn't mean to destroy (refer to Cooper's 4 firearm safety rules ) Ultimately it's not a gun killing, it's an irresponsible person doing the killing. Back on topic... Vulkyn I'd suggest an H&K or Glock in 9mm. The ammo is available in your area of the world, and it's easier to handle. I know this is an ongoing debate, 9m vs. 40S&W vs. 45ACP (and somebody mentioned 357mag and even 44 mag). Personally the round you pick should fit your ability to handle it. If you go down to a local gun store here in the USA unfortunately you'll hear a lot of the salesmen suggesting 45acp purely based on it's power (that is, if you ask for suggestions for self defense). I've unfortunately seen it even when the would-be buyer is a very petite framed woman looking to defend herself. This thing in your hand is a TOOL which means YOU must be able to CONTROL it, and not have it over-power you. You can accurately follow-up faster with with a lighter round than with something you can't effectively control and 2 rounds of something a little lighter is better than 1 of the others, especially if that 1 doesn't hit... So choose a round based on how well YOU can CONTROL it, and it's availability. That being said, I know my ability to control 40S&W and I chose it over 9mm for my H&K USP. It's not about ultimate power when defending yourself, if it were we'd all be carrying a Thompson/Center pistol in 416 rigby... Don't be a sheep ignorant of the wolves around the corner. Own a gun, Carry if you can legally (with a permit or whatever it takes) and Defend your Life and Liberty and the Lives and Liberties of others, but do so Responsibly or not at all... I am a new-comer here, and do not mean to be disrespectful to those which have come before me, but the aforementioned is my honest opinion Thank you for taking the time to read my reply -Anthony EDIT: the two posts above mine occurred while I was busy typing slowly/eating dinner and didn't see them until I hit "Post Reply"

| Catbuilder-- rifled slug -- As I prev. posted took down 800lb. cow moose at 50yds.plus. One shot, she sat down and rolled sideways. Double Ott Buck -- can take down a full grown deer or a 500lb. black bear at 25 to 50 yds. no prob.(Black bear record in NFLD. is 800lb) So visualize what that would do to a 200lb. intruder. I think maybe hang him half way up the mizzen from the companion way entrance. Mean, mean , particles of lead. |

| Things getting booring in China -- I don't like stewed cats or field rats man so I hunt bigger game for meat. Nothing wrong with cats or rats it's just a case of different strokes for different folks. I hunt either moose-deer-or- seal by gov. licence to cull and control their populations to keep the herds healthy. Look around you, you'll get the picture. I don't hunt or fish for trophy and never kill anything i don't eat as a result i don't hunt bear(meat too fatty) or birds (too little meat for the effort). Thats enough about me what do you eat, unborn animals verses those born ?? As i prev. posted never met an anti-most things but they were full of hot air double talk, however i'll give you the benifit of the doubt as soon as you loosen that leather belt allowing you to bend over and complete polishing those leather shoes. ---- |

| I admire true vegetarians for holding to their convictions. But I enjoy meat and fish and the energy it gives me. |
