On board: any device that records the position, like a marine gps or a laptop with a usb-gps. Waypoints are the easiest, you can transfer the list to a pc.

At home: a computer with a Google map. With the edit function a symbol is added for each waypoint.

Several hobbyists and small companies use software to plot a complete trip at once, but you can also do it manually in just a few minutes.
www.geosports.nl is dedicated to online plotting for sailing events.

If you really are in the middle of nowhere, there still are possibilities like an Iridium sat-phone (not cheap, but also not "mega buck") or an amateur band shortwave transceiver. In coastal areas and with the proper equipment (amplifier) you can communicate with a cell phone antenna up to 50 miles away.
Personally I would call from the next port.

OR, you could use a SPOT Transponder on your vessel... It has a built-in GPS and then sends a Position Message, at some preset Interval, which can be tracked on their Website. There is also a Distress Message that can be sent from a SPOT as well.... Poor Man's EPIRB.... AND is not a Government Owned, or Run, Outfit....
