| FWIW, gold plating does have it's place on yachts. Plating all the hardware with either nickel or gold is more effective for a bright finish than having a crew constantly polish brass or bronze. In the early 90's the cost trade between recurring maintenance hours and initial cost came down on the side of plating. Now plating the whole hull is a different kettle of fish, with different problems...I wonder what the fenders are made of...mink?

| Unless I see it in a trade journal I don't believe it. Adding 100,00kg of gold to a hull would make this so overloaded I doubt it would float, and gold itself would be way to soft to use as a structural material. It might be possible to gold leaf a boat with gold, but it wouldn't take 100,00kg to do it.

Maybe they meant to say 100,000 grams of gold? that would be a little more in the realm of reason -- speaking physically, anyway....

| Well, as rediculous it sounds, the designers website has the same info. stuarthughes.com But considering the base boat, Baia 100, has an unladen displ. of 70 tons, I think the boatyard owner has confiscated about 95% of the of gold delivered. Lurvio

| Just thick, this amount of gold would take up slightly more than 185 cubic foot of space. If you Made a floor out of this much gold, it would be a sheet 1/2 an inch think, and cover 4400 square feet. More interior room than a boat this size has (I think, though I couldn't swear to it). There just isn't enough room, or load capacity on a boat this size.

| Gold is typically referred to in units of troy ounces, 31.1035 gram. So perhaps its meant to be 100,000 ounces, or 3,215 kg. That's still around $160 million in materials, before fitting...... |

| Both the news site, and the designer site specify kilograms, so I doubt it is a mistake in that way. Maybe it is just a cheap scam to get a title and media time. ![]() Lurvio
