| He writes well and presents a well thought out case on the topic he is addressing but the content is strictly American and primarily considers the local readership and not from a global perspective - I look at the big picture and how things influence the rest of the world... Too many Americans feel the would ends outside the borders of the USA, and to be cheeky, it is in actuality the reverse... ![]() ![]() From one of his book reviews (your second link), "...While nations differ, particular kinds of behavior produce particular kinds of results in country after country. Moreover, American society in recent years has been imitating behavior patterns that have produced negative-- and sometimes catastrophic-- consequences in many other countries around the world..." and concluding with "...Getting some clearer sense of what this risks is just one of many reasons to read "The Character of Nations"..." - - a pity the advertising is so distracting... My time for reading is about 4 hours a day, (sometimes lots more), and I concentrate on economics matters and relevant political oversights - I do not link to my private subscriptions for obvious reasons... but they do influence my attitude and thinking in global terms...

| mas you analogy of the escalator could possible be more accurate than even you would first imagine. The escalator is going down till it reaches the bottom, but then as in banking it doubles back on itself and under the cover of darkness re appears at the top again. Just a thought. Boston I don't like statistics, never have, I don't read masses links either. I watch Bloomberg Tv read the BBc and the Bangkok post and I can make my own weather cock. If people realy could tell you whats going to happen we wouldn't be in this **** now. China has been the worlds leader for 3000 years and was probably the founder of America before anyone thought about it. They invented the gun which has been improved on little in time. Im not going to worry about the Chinese because they have a government that acts,--as quick and as draconian as is necessary. The West may not like that --human rights etc etc, but they do what they have to do, unlike ours. |

| no worries the BBC is one of my best sources hey speaking of which send me a link for the Bangkok post Ild like to check that one out some time I pretty much live by statistics ,averages and patterns things like that is what make day trading work at least for me its also what makes science fly and given that Ive a science degree its just what Ive been brought up on although I did finally land a fat remodel that gives me some real work to do and check this these folks just bought a second home ( in Colorado at least they have at least one each in San Fran as well ) just had a meeting with em and they are all about getting after "the Cabin" soon as Im done with the primary residence so Im back to working with my hands for a while which I would much prefer over rolling dice China has never been a power house like Japan or Germany has been for so long I kinda agree that they are burning out there population buy screwing with the fertility rate the way they have so they could be facing some interesting challenges in the near future seems that even if you consider they have a surplus you have to ask what that equates to per capita and what the needed improvements in services it will take to sustain there growing and aging population or will they do what China has traditionally done consider the public expendable for the greater good ( of the dictator ) my prediction is that a significant percentage of manufacturing consumed here after the fall ( hyperinflation ? ) will have to return here no two ways about it there just wont be the money to do anything else hell Im even planning on buying a band saw mill for the shop ( always wanted one of those and given what Im about to spend on this next hard wood order I could just buy that dam saw and do it myself ) my bet is the economists round here have there eye out for signs of hyperinflation and have a strategy to keep it under control or at least Ild like to think they do on the other hand given the fools we have in power lately you never can be sure |

| Boston, you'll save on just the kerf, not to mention quarter sawing, custom cutting, etc.. Beware of volcanic ash (the bark of our stuff is full of it here)! 'Nother blade, 'nother blade, 'nother blade... As far as checking hyper-inflation... no matter what the ass-holes with the graphs and formulae suggest, there is but one way to see long-term inflation - printing currency. There is no dark science and they know exactly what they are doing when they do it. |

| ya I think I was looking at a 20% savings per log from a chainsaw mill to a band mill but the chain saw mill I can get carbide tipped blades I used em after my first logy cost me about a steal blade a day to carve up the carbides I can get without brush guards which works great for log work they sweep out the copes cleaner without em ![]() my bet is a steal band blade will last about a day if I dont break it first $20~$40 bucks a blade depends on how wide the throat is and what type I end up getting a carbide chain saw blade will cost me about two bills or maybe seven steal bands if you want to look at it that way I need to look into that some more but Im leaning towards the band mill even though I dont think I can get decent blades not sure my Grand Dad old Robby had a mill at the place in Vermont but it was the old school stationary circular blade type with the biggest blade you've ever seen in your life on it rigged to a tractor pto was the biggest pain in the ass imaginable as for these fools in charge round here actually knowing what they are doing Im not convinced speaking of which what the hell is Palin think she is doing .quitting like that not going to look good for her run for office if you ask me she would have been better off sticking it out whatever not trying to rub any salt or nothing but hey doesnt seem like the slickest of moves the trade deficit needs immediate attention and the vast amounts of cash held overseas is a wild card if you ask me the solution basically requires they take money out of circulation in step with inflation or add it in the case of deflation ( I think we are still in a deflationary mode ) which they generally do with the feds interest rates but these days those rates are zero not much fudge factor there only place it can go is up which does tighten the money supply but wasnt it loosening the money supply that is the main thrust of dumping trillions into the market in the first place and so the fear that if you remove the checks on inflation fighting deflation you end up with a good chance of a wild fire of inflation once money is in the market place its hard to remove specifically once its overseas and thats were it seams most of ours is going thus the expectation were screwed with little ability to control the value of the dollar overseas ( other than by manipulating the markets ) and with little ability to buy back dollars here at home what else can happen but inflation whatever they got up there sleeve better be good cause frankly I dont have any more faith in Obummer than I did in Reorge oh hey I got sorta shot on the fourth some fool threw a bunch of 30 cal blanks into the fire at our party and as I was shielding the girl from the flying casings one of em caught me in the leg barely penetrated but still left a lovely circular bruise with a nice whole in the middle looks just like a gun shot wound but was from the wrong end of the shell left a hole in my new jeans needless to say we threw the jack ass out I lived B |

| nah I buy mostly from the hillbilly mills not much closer than Missouri and some as far as the Adirondacks or Appalachia but nearly always east of here depends on what wood Im after try cutting curly walnut or birds eye maple with a dull blade though like any other self respecting woodwright I dont like having to stop constantly to change out smoking warped steel blades or deal with the crappy cuts not sure how this even became a question but Ill go with a decent blade any time ends up saving money and giving better work if you guys are going to try and tell me that steel is the blade of choice then I think I can safely conclude you have no idea what you are talking about |

| I think whoosh may have been referring to a boat building material as he seems to favour boats with metal.... I am loosing interest in posting on economic matters - sort of like looking at a dog that has been squashed by a truck and the dog seems to refuse to die - bloody agony to watch.... Well sometimes the US economy seems like that dog - I need a break, so I intend to concentrate on building my boat - until something interesting comes along - in the form of economics news - then I will find that I cannot resist sharing my thoughts ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()
