Effective Boats I need to build a boat that will have the largest ratio of the weight it can hold to the weight of hte boat itself. We are only allowed to use laminar materials and no pressurised containers. The boat only has to flaot for an hour or two so it does not have to be very durable. What would be the best hull design, and the best materials to use?

What would be the point of this exercise if we did the work for you? You will get a better response if you post your ideas for comments. I do hope you share your results with us. Gary ![]()

Be fair, Gary - some folks just don't get the "learn by doing" system at all. I've seen kids who just plain can't imagine a world where they had to think, I mean, like, teachers should TELL you stuff, right? Ri-i-i-ght...... Steve

| Guest: Start by separating the problem into sections. For example, what the cargo density and shape is.

Does the boat have to travel anywhere, or does it just sit until disintegration? If just sitting, think about why a raindrop is the shape it is. ;-) (No. I won't "help", but I will allow myself to drop hints...)

As long as we are discussing things, help a non engineer with laminar material construction. Dose this mean just the skin no other support?
