    About the smell:

‘‘Both male and female Maned Wolves use their urine to communicate, e.g. to mark their hunting paths, or the places where they have buried hunted prey. The urine has a very distinctive smell, which some people liken to hops or cannabis. The responsible substance is very likely a pyrazine, which occurs in both plants. (In the Rotterdam Zoo, this smell once set the police on a hunt for cannabis smokers.)’’

    * Good questions Boston, that makes six of them.................

    Stan, please provide some answers . . . . . . . . :?:

    Regards,

at the Denver zoo they keep them in a run away from the other paddocks
mostly for privacy as they are trying to bread them but the side benefit is it consolidates the smell over by the big cats which also reek to high hell

    Well, they have succeeded . . . . ! !

Dec. 24, 2009: three Maned Wolf puppies born at Denver Zoo........

I don't think these smelly loners would make good pets though.

    • The Pueblo Chieftain: Maned Wolves reign as Ultimate Loners

‘‘ .... One of the few solitary large canids, they hunt alone rather than in packs. Though a monogamous male and female share a territory, they rarely approach one another except to mate. .... shy nocturnal animals .... (By Tom Galusha, a Pueblo Zoo docent) ’’

I think the animal (and the owner) will get very unhappy if this animal gets forced into pet style behavior.

    Cheers!

I dont think there is any forcing an animal to pet like behavior
    they just get socialized
specially when it comes to food
once an animal figures out where its food comes from they tend to get friendly
    at least most
    some no but canids definitely

    Podenco's & Pharaoh's

Boston, I think it's a bad idea to have a Maned Wolf as a pet.

If you like the type and character (without a lot of the disadvantages of the Maned Wolf as a pet) then my advise is to look at the Podenco Ibicenco or the Pharaoh Hound.

Podenco Ibicenco (Ibizan Hound in English) comes in red or white or a combination of the two and in smooth and wire coated varieties.

Pharaoh Hound comes in red smooth coat only.

Both not easy dogs but I guess that's what you want by wanting a Maned Wolf as a pet.

If interested in the Podenco Ibicenco I advice to contact Susan Fegan (USA) whom I met in Brussels in 1995.

    Good luck!

That big stilt legged fox (MANED WOLF) was decades ago when I took a young zoo animal home to try to nurse it back to health. Middle 1960s.
They are very shy and loners in the wild. Ir was kept in a large box open on 2 sides and under a roof. I did hand feed it for 2 weeks and it never tried to bite but always seemed a little scared. They do smell though. I believe they could be house trained. I tried to get a female even writing to a few countries where they habitate to no avail. They are now endangered and I was hoping to start a domisticated line for future insurance. No luck and I'm to old now to try. Beautiful animals though and I love them.

I believe those are also called salluki's
very closely related to gray hounds as are Italian grays

gray hounds make great pets but salluki's and Italian grays are terrible
salluki's might not be so bad but a friend had an Italian gray and it was a nightmare
thing bounced off the walls constantly and could not even remotely be house trained

I have several friends who have wolves and several others who have foxes and they make great pets
Im sure the maned wolf would also

I would probably not be able to get one anyway so you dont have much to worry about

    oh
what does make a terible pet is a lion
friend of mine had one right up until it dragged him across the street and killed the neighbors dog for barking at it

he was in Florida a the time

I told him it was probably not a great idea but he insisted

    brilliant eh

    oh well

had an x girl that was a famous artist
she drew pen and ink portraits of dogs for a living
    made a killing doing it
she pretty much taught me every dog species there is so Im all disappointed in myself for missing that

a silver fox would be cool as well but they are a bit nippy
    they do however house train
they would be illegal for white folks to own but not a native american
although off the reservation Im not sure what the deal is

‘‘made a killing doing it’’ I guess it's an expression, but I don't know how to interpret it, can you explain please :?:
