Ignore them. Energy independence does not mean that the United States must be entirely self-sufficient. It simply means reducing the role of oil in world politics -- turning it from a strategic commodity into merely another thing to sell.<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<< thats too simple to work,,hehe

Sad but, as you say, Heinz, ... fact. We are so screwed up here that there is a single act in the political process universally recognized by liberals and conservatives alike as the ultimate sin. This terrible act? Telling the truth. It's considered something that will open one to too many attacks by opponents, and that will alienate too many voters. So those who want to be "leaders" tell the masses what their consultants tell them they want to hear. There is no discussion of the hard issues, just cliches and demonization of the opposition. Collectively, we deserve it; most voters won't take the time and effort to think about what the consequences of getting what they want will be. "Journalism" has degenerated into entertainment.

Amen...

Brian,

They are now estimating that Mexico will export its last barrel in 4 years... circa 2012. Now thats scary, the drop off in production is huge and domestic usage will approximately equal production by that date.

As for not drilling, I think that you need to exploit everything you can to soften the blow here. Use the reserves you have, they are not sufficient but they will help buy time and time is needed to transition without economic hardship. I think if you crash into a wall of enthusiastic and well meaning green ideals the reality will be substantial hardship. This is not an either or choice, you/we are setup with a massive amount of infrastructure to support liquid hydrocarbon fuels, changing that over to something else in a twenty year period is break neck speed. We need to exploit what we have but greatly encourage competitive alternates, you could argue that we are to late to fill the gap with what we have in the way of oil but have not yet tapped, that might be so, but not to go after the closest solution here will be a major problem. By all means go green, sustainable etc but not to ease it in is insane... we are replacing a 100+ years of accumulative investment, to ask one generation to replace that in the space of 20 years or so is a big challenge, to shorten that period is asking for big trouble.

While Iran is moving quickly toward energy independence, Brazil is already there. It's a striking turnaround; three decades ago, the country imported 80 percent of its oil supply

i found a way we can all save money on gas,,hehe ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

NEW YORK (Reuters) - A Nevada brothel is trying to stimulate business by offering free petrol.

Clients of the Shady Lady Ranch will get a $50 (25 pound) petrol voucher if they fork out $300 (152 pounds) -- worth about one hour's worth of services -- at the brothel in Beatty, Nevada, 130 miles (209 km) northwest of Las Vegas.

Owner James Davis said he already has had to order another $1,000 set of petrol vouchers because the first $1,000 were spent in one week.

"It's rocking along. We're doing quite well. June and July historically are not big months," said Davis, who is co-owner of the brothel along with his wife Bobbi, in a telephone interview.

The $50 rebate would roughly cover the cost of a round trip drive from Las Vegas to the ranch.

Davis said business at the ranch, which has been operating for 16 years, generally slows in the early summer. He said the brothel regularly offers specials to lure clients and his wife came up with the petrol vouchers for this month.

U.S. petrol prices hit a record $4.08 a gallon last week, up 38 percent from a year ago.

Brothels, illegal in most U.S. states, are legal in parts of Nevada..

I'd rather own the brothel than have to spend $300 for a "short time" to get $50 bucks of petrol? - That I would call a 'loose/loose situation' for the customer.....

This news item is not good - - May give the shrub the excuse to "attack" http://www.abc.net.au/news/stories/2...section=justin

Iran has test-fired nine long and medium-range missiles, including one which it has previously said could travel as far as Israel and United States bases in the region, state media reports.

The tests have come at a time of increased tension between Iran and Israel over Tehran's disputed nuclear program, which the West fears is aimed at making bombs.

Iran says its nuclear program is only for power generation.

State Press TV said the missiles tested by Iran's Revolutionary Guards included a "new" Shahab 3 missile, which officials have said could reach targets 2,000 kilometres away.

The tests come just one day after Iran threatened to "burn" Tel Aviv and United States interests around the world if it was attacked over its nuclear activities.

It is a response to a recent military exercise by Israel which was seen as rehearsal for an attack on Iran's nuclear facilities.

A Revolutionary Guards commander says the missiles are ready for shooting at any place, any time.
