Another story I heard about hydrogen... What are you going to store it in.. It is the smallest molecule, it permeates (goes thru) everything and makes most stuff brittle and even more porous quite quickly. so how is it stored, it ain't it is generated as needed for the fools that need it... So put 20 sq yards of solar panels to make electricity to make hydrogen out of water and run your engine, and replace most parts regularly as they crumble and break - - so why not skip the middle bit and get a horse - and remove the engine and all that other useless stuff so the "one-horsepower" engine is not overloaded....

On the same? topic - - Saudis putting an extra 200,000 barrels a day when what is needed is AT LEAST 1,500,000 barrels a day for current shortfall and RAPIDLY GROWING NEEDS - - - ****, what else can one say as an adjective of sheer desperation at the stupidity and ******** that is purveyed as reasonable responses to the global need/demand for oil which is not there for the getting.... I hope "monica" learns to suck other things as she may be redundant soon...

7:30 Report "The end of the age of petroleum" Kerry O'Brien speaks with Richard Heinberg, renowned educator and author of a number of books about the end of the petroleum age.

He knows of what he speaks...

That was his second interview that I am aware of with Kerry O'Brien, I would say more to come with more painful medicine... Look and learn and get prepared - I just pray I can get the materials to build my boat.... and not have to hide by running in circles hehehe

All I want is to see something grand and dramatic, then the cards & rules are laid on the table, profits taken/losses worn... Then business can get back to doing business - hopefully based on supply/demand..... I wish, but will refrain from even thinking of holding my breath :D:D:D:D:D

I just noticed that Gold went "up" this morning, did anyone note the cause? - about 9am NY time on the 19 June----- does this mean Gold is going to bust the US$1000 barrier again? very soon.... as money gets moved into more reliable commodities....?

It is a supply and demand equation. A bit like a scale balance. When supply is high the scale tips and prices tumble. When demand is high the scale tips the other way and prices skyrocket. The level of rise and fall depends on the market damping. Hopefully forward positions in the commodity market are stabilising rather than destabilising.

The balance of opinion on this thread seems to focus squarely on the supply side - and it is easy to draw the conclusion that "governments" (maybe environmental lobbyists or simply Gdubya) are to blame - yes we are big into blame on this thread.

Fact is new oil capacity takes time to develop even if there are untapped resources available to develop.

The other dampener on price rise and fall in a commodity market is ease of substitution. From a demand side what can replace oil?

OK - now we get down to the real question. How much does the price need to go up before YOU dramatically reduce YOUR CONSUMPTION and make a difference. Take a look in the mirror to see who is to blame - YOU.

My feeling is that if YOU are in China using your little Vespa (or 200W electric) to tootle to and from the 12 hour a day 6.5 day per week job YOU will not be feeling a lot of pain with fuel prices. Likewise if YOU are in Bangladesh using your trike to make a living ferrying goods about. Now if YOU are on another part of the globe feeding your V8 SS Commodore or V10 Dodge RAM YOU might be questioning if it is a good idea to put the ski boat in the water this weekend (if it happens to be a company car the company accountant might be looking at your salary package to offset the cost of fueling your gas guzzler)

So what have YOU done this week to improve the supply/demand equation. (For MY part I have taken the unprecedented initiative to suggest to my limo driver that I would not be upset at all if he fronted in a Prius rather than the usual V6 (yes V6 not V8) Statesman to take me to the airport next Monday - oh the sacrifices I am prepared to make for the common good.)

Welcome to the dungeon Rick.... That was a nicely thought out and presented case, How about getting one of the "shock Jocks" to respond to that on local radio. I lack many more contacts that have not "banned" my email address, in trying to counter that silly Liberal leader seeking "fuel subsidies"... I thought that was a socialist/communist philosophy? when will the libs realise if there is reduced supply the price goes up. Fuel watch I agree with - just to keep some of the local profiteers honest. Fiddling with the price just invites disaster that MUST be carried later by the paying motorist/consumer....

As I said earlier, the 200,000 barrels a day "promised to Mr Rudd by the Saudi rulers" is just a piss in the park, as the current shortfall is more than 1,500,000 barrels a day and rising faster than a successful NASA launch rocket. The days of cheap and readily available liquid fuel are OVER, Face Facts, walk, cycle, plan any trips by car and expect higher prices as available fuel diminishes....

That "token 200,000 barrels a day" to me suggests that the Arab supplies are almost empty, newly developed oilfields are just words as it takes a good 10 years to develop and they seem to be (as best as can be ascertained in a fairly secretive "sector") not really significant, of poor quality of difficult to recover so expect NO CHANGE in production. The end of bounteous liquid fuel is NOW, Change of attitude is URGENT as several insiders and otherwise knowledgeable people have suggested 5 years to implement change.... or walk, plough behind a bullock, transport your produce by bullock dray or use horses to move fresh vegies quicker to local markets...and Electric RAIL needs an urgent boost, as does improvements in the internet backbone so business can be conducted there....

It is welcome back - I was #7 post in this time waster and I believe stimulated some hot debate with my goading of Brian on his initial post. I note that 1much has been a persistent contributor on a topic he has inside knowledge on.

The thread has become more a stock market report than anything to do with boating. But then I guess a lot of boats use fuel - none of mine though.

My latest idea is one I can back-pack to the water but still go fast. It will mean I will have no need to blow the cobwebs out of the old commodore to make the weekend trek to the local lake.

So at the risk of turning the market report into a boating thread, what do you think of the attached pontoon. I designed the shape of this for a pair of pontoons to fit to a quike:
    http://www.steppebysteppe.com.au/
Still to fabricate the prop for it. The quike will have wheels removed and mount on two cross braces between the pontoons. Overall beam will be 8ft and LOA 18ft. Unloaded is 250kg and will have capacity to displace 800kg if you really could find that much to put on it.

My thought for a fast boat is a single inflatable hull 8m long and 10" diameter. It will weigh 5kg and should outperform V11G.
