Captain's license, tips?

After a lifetime of sailing I'm finally considering a captain's license. I've spent 2 months each summer on a friend's sailboat for the past 8 years, and all this is reasonably well documented. The boat is a 20 ton, 50' sailboat. This should easily qualify me for an OUPV with a sailing endorsement, and maybe a 25 ton Inland/Lake Master w/ sailing. Ultimately I'd like to have a near coastal.

I'm looking for tips on which license to go for, and where to do it. Either Myrtle Beach, SC or Newport Beach, CA would be ideal. Low cost is of course a goal but quality is paramount.

Any ideas?
