But you weren't knocking them out like muffins either. One little boatbuilder in Atlanta managed to build about 20,000 runabouts in 1957! Running round the clock, they could roll one out the door every 15 minutes. Epoxy coatings started showing up around 1957 also.

The USA is a large country and after WWII there was a considerable amount of discretionary funds available to the average guy, so a home build craze came on and lasted through the 70's. Manufactured boats (like above) also had a big surge, through the 50's and into the 70's, which eventually lead to the "dark years" where there was such a glut of boats on the market, you couldn't sell crap for a reasonable price. As a result, there's lots of "barn finds" available over here, but you do have to do the "legwork" to find them. I found a 1957 "Clyde" 16' runabout about 7 years ago and it was literally pristine, without a drop of paint ever placed on her hot molded mahogany hull. I got it out of a barn (literally having to move a tractor out of the way) for $300.

Epoxy as a coating wasn't really viable until the late 60's, but as an adhesive, shortly after WWII.
