Boat (sail) Ownership

I'll try to start a poll going here.(First attempt so be patient)
I'm interested in how long people kept (or plan to keep) their sailboat.
Type/size/ use not the question.

Comments please in the forum as to why you did/did not keep your boat for whatever period and if you upgraded to larger or just different type.

I have opened with more then 5 yrs. I would hope after 5 yrs I will be in a position to get something a bit larger. If in the end I keep it longer it probably means my boat has fullfilled my needs and I decided I did not need anything else.

Yes, as it sort of ties in with my other postings about modern "sail" boats not neccessarily being the "real deal" in terms of usability when compared to some older designs. So I wonder how long and why people may or may not keep the boats they have.
But it could be motorsailers I guess, although they were not what I was refferring to of the new boats I looked at. Not pure motor boats however.

I posted on another thread just a few days ago.

If you call mayday --do you think it will be a yacht or a power boat that comes to save you,---- and which would you prefer?

The whole world had sail boats at one time. Then some one invented steam and eventually diesel engine.

People still have sail boats for fun and as traditionalist enjoy flapping sails N stuff ripping thier finger nails out. Like people enjoy vintage cars on a sunday afternoon. Then put it back in the garage and get a proper car out.

But even these people understand its just playing at it.

I notice you all have a dieslel engine to get you home safely.

Every cynical Jack!?! si Iguess the answer to your other post would be that if it didn't have athumping great diesel (or is it a dieslel?) you would rather drown! typical of you, drowning to spite me! I'd have no one to extract the urine from!!

to get back to the post - the last one lasted just over ten years - then the new wife got in the way!!! I guess that's the main reason most men get rid of their boats - I have a cunning plan - when I can get away from the list of jobs she wants me to do (why's it written on a roll of toilet paper, it goes on and on - bit like Jack!)

Jack, Jack. 'Mayday' ? Do they still use that term. I thought the current call was 'Pan Pan...'
And should I ever need to use such a call I'd rely on Grace Darling and her dad to come to the rescue....
As for the diesel tucked in back of Snafu...Ballast old chum. Ballast and an emergency anchor...

mayday-- means I am sinking and death is imminent.

pan pan-- means I will not die but am in desperate need of help.

medico --means I need medical assistance on the radio.

Precisely Jack. Which is why we true sailors would observe the time honoured tradition of the sea and go down with our ship...hence the absence of 'Mayday' in our vocabulary....
