Guillermo wouldn't oxen be a bit slow for recovery in a surf or are they just to tow the boat up the beach after the landing?

Mike,
That and the last one are old photos. Fishermen used the oxes to tow the boat up the beach.

horses launching a lifeboat

Video of horses launching a lifeboat.

There was not too much of a surf the day this video was made.
In 1979 8 horses were drowned during a launch for a real calamity.

jorghenderson - do you still launch of the beach with horses for real emergencies? Here in England we (the RNLI) used to but beach launces tend to be done using tractors now - they cango deeper and of course yoy don't get the chance to kill them! You know what the English are like about animals! (tractors aren't so labour extensive to keep either)

many years agowe had a chap in s.a. that did not have a boat so he used his horse to rescue people in the surf, luckily for him there was no humane society those days or he would have been in big trouble, they both drowned and became national heroes.now we use 4x4 vehicles
